Anyway, the Forum has been back up for several weeks, but for some reason it has been off-line since sometime yesterday. Not sure what this current issue is, but Kurt did a great job getting us back on-line. Hope the current issue is not anything serious. I'm wondering if these recent messages kicked were somehow related to an issue on his server? Tom, I saw your post on the CPS forum and thought it was an interesting idea, but it looked like the feedback had you more or less talked you out of it. Not sure if your still thinking through this or not, but if you get it off the ground I'd consider participation. It does seem like a lot of work for whoever organizes it. I have some thoughts if this is still something you're considering. All the best, Scott _________________ Scott E. Hi guys, last issue I got was Volume 1:Issue 10. Maybe I'm missing something so I checked the forum and it was still hacked up. If you're all still out there I wanted to run something by you. , something akin to herding cats. I'd like to get together some of us pipemakers who aren't prolific enough to justify a table at one of the big pipe shows, ohio, va, or NY. I personally make about 1 1/2 pipes a week, and am never able to accumulate more than 1 0r 2 pipes at a time. I thought If I could get together enough pipes from all of us "hobbyists" and everyone pay a bit to be represented I could get a table at one of the shows. It not so much about "selling" as it is about exposure. I think we get a bad rap because we work out of our basements, garages and sheds, don't have websites, have "day jobs" etc. .. But I can't get a table at a show and lay out 2 pipes I think its a shame that there is no mentor or apprentice system here in the states. Ultimately, I'd like to see ALL US pipemakers become members. In the states its "everyman for himself, and we are products of this non-system. The forum effectively fills that gap in a way, But I envsion the "Guild" with: representation at at least one show a year with apx 50 of our best pipes a nice portfolio containing pipemakers bios a website/consignment shop a community which exists and convenes outside the internet Co-operative buying power for briar ( i cant afford a Sackful but the onsies method ain't working either) I was once a board member of an Artists Guild and I know the beauty of having a show. I am working on a website to back this thing up but am delayed because I don't know what to call it "Pipmakers Guild? Union? Co-op? Any ideas. ? Lastly, whats up with the forum and or/ list? Is it done? That particular stem is made of vulcanite. The airway becomes curved once you bend the stem - which can be done either by boiling in water, heating with a heat gun, or by using an alcohol flame. Curved shanks are an entirely different story. That requires specialized drill bits on curved/stationary shafts. It's an odd arrangement, and I don't know of many places that can do it. -- Kurt Huhn pipecrafter at pipecrafter.com http://www.pipecrafter.com From pipecrafter at pipecrafter.com Sun Jan 14 22:17:08 2007 From: pipecrafter at pipecrafter.com (Kurt Huhn) Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2007 22:17:08 -0500 Subject: [Pipemakers] Pipemakers ?Union? Run it by us over there, as I'm pretty sure this list doesn't get much ttraffic, and has almost no subscribers in comparison. -- Kurt Huhn pipecrafter at pipecrafter.com http://www.pipecrafter.com From sethile.pipes at gmail.com Mon Jan 15 00:20:52 2007 From: sethile.pipes at gmail.com (Scott Thile) Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2007 23:20:52 -0600 Subject: [Pipemakers] Forum? I kept getting a "web address not found" error so I'm guessing there were server problems. Everything seems to be working for me now. We had banked on a couple hours of downtime, but it ended up going all day. Everything's good now though. -- Kurt Huhn pipecrafter at pipecrafter.com http://www.pipecrafter.com From sethile.pipes at gmail.com Mon Jan 15 11:29:48 2007 From: sethile.pipes at gmail.com (Scott Thile) Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2007 10:29:48 -0600 Subject: [Pipemakers] Forum? My ISP's DNS and one of the others I was using were still not resolving the URL. I checked my son's tricked out machine, and sure enough, the DNS he was using resolved it, so I switched mine over to the same ones and now I'm connecting like gangbusters (must be a much faster DNS). Anyway, I suppose this should percolate through all DNSs soon, but a guy can only wait so long ;) Thanks for all your work on the forum, Kurt! Seems I only truly appreciate how much I use it when I can't!
