What in the?!
It's true. For a couple years now I've been quietly dabbling in knife making, playing with steel, getting feedback on my work, and really focusing on form, fit, and finish. It's a long story, and if you've heard me tell it, it's a rather ironic twist that I have a knife here next to this pipe. Suffice to say, several ago, I originally bought a bunch of tools to make knives, and those tools now are used to make pipes. As I tell folks, all those years ago, I wasn't a very good knifemaker, so I switched gears and went to pipes. Well, I'm finally happy with my knife work, and this s the first sole authorship knife I've ever offered for sale to the general public. The steel is 1075 carbon steel, bolsters are copper, brass pins, and the briar used here was actually cut from the same block as the pipe.
Oh! There's a pipe here too!
This pipe has a generously wide bowl, but it's also somewhat shallow, perfect for flakes, cakes, and "krumble kakes". Some of that stuff will burn for hours, and a bowl this size (from experience) wil go at least an hour, and usually more like two if your a dedicated flake afficianado. A bowl this size will last me my entire drive to or from Boston, with dottle left over that needs to be knocked out at the end of the drive. It's also got a synthetic horn ring on the stem. Why isn't it on the shank? Well, the airway is at a rather exteme angle (yes, it passes a cleaner!) and if I put the ring on the shank, you'd never be able to ream the airway with a drill bit in a couple years to remove the tar and particulate build up - since we all know a pipe cleaner only gets you so far.
So, uh, why the pipe and knife together?
Hey, I'm a pipe maker, right? Nobody outside of a few folks really even know I work the steel. What better way of offering my first generally available knife than to offer it with a pipe? That's why you're all here, right? Pipes? I figure, make a splash. Offer it up with a Cityman grade that damn near made Nobleman, and give a two-fer deal on it. Get a great pipe, and the first sole authorship knife I've ever offered!
And check out the new "glamour shots" photos! Ooooh! Sexy!
