This was originally going to be sandblasted, since I thought the grain orientation would give an interesting blast, but the surface was good enough to warrant a smooth finish. I also thought that the grain on the shank might make an interesting transition into the grain of the cumberland stem ring. All in all, I think it worked out very well. It's also a very light pipe, making clenching a breeze. I've left the bit a little thicker to allow for clenching as well, because nobody is going to want to busy their hands when their pipe simply becomes an extension of their face.
