When I started this pipe, I just grabbed a piece of briar and started grinding, similar to Kingyo. Originally the top was not going to be as large as as it was, but when I smoothed out the plateaux top, I saw all the well-defined birdseyes and decided to keep as much as I could. Luckily, the grain cooperated and I was able to keep a large expanse of that delicious stuff. The grain on the sides of the bowl is nothing to sneeze at either. It's a great straight grain that morphs into a flame near the top and hints at the birseyes just around the corner.

You have no idea how hard it is to sand between the shank and bowl. What a trial that was - and as hard as it was, it was smooth sailing compared with trying to buff and polish that area. Good grief!
