I've been sitting here for almost half an hour trying to come up with one of my interesting stories
that center around the creation of, or inspiration for this pipe, and I simply can't. I have to confess, it's a
little odd that there's not a really story to this one. I mean, all I did was pick up a block of wood, see a pipe in it,
and shape that pipe. Either I was influenced by unseen hands, or something else is going on here. I don't even really have a
story about the shaping.
Oh, I know! I would like to say that this pipe would not have been possible without some recent improvements I made in my tooling.
In the past, I have rough shaped almost solely using a belt grinder, and done fine detail work using a dremel. However,
I've recently started using a grinding wheel to rough shape pipes, and the payoff is incredible. The curves and concave surfaces on this
pipe would not be possible using a belt grinder, and neither would the interplay between surfaces - like the bottom and side of the shank.
Even the area where the shank and bowl meet is almost impossible using a belt grinder, and with a shaping disc, it's very easy to create.
So I guess there's a bit of a story after all.
