Kingyo
Price: $325
This is my first try at an asymmetrical shape. For this one, I pulled out all the stops. I've shaped entirely freehand, and I've drilled pipes after shaping, but I have *never* shaped a pipe directly from a square block without knowing what that pipe was going to look like beforehand. With this pipe I grabbed the closest cross-grained block of wood, and started shaping on the belt grinder. When it was all over, I had something looking similar to this, and my lungs were filled with briar dust (the respirator went missing a couple weeks ago). Once I had it shaped, then I had to figure out to drill all the various holes - no small feat considering all the complex angles and possible ways of completely buggering the stummel. In the end, what emerged was a pipe with loads and loads of movement and interesting angles. Even the stem moves and flows with the pipe.
So, what's up with the name? Well, to me the pipe looks like one of those big, fat goldfish that move their entire bodys to swim. Some of them don't have dorsal fins, compounding th eamount of moving they have to do in order to move an inch or two for food. To me, this pipe looked like it was struggling to move, torquing it's entire body from left to right in order to get a couple inches further. I decided to name it accordingy, but you can't just call it "goldfish". That seems so pedestrian, like calling a Maserati "car". Well, apparently "kingyo" is Japanese for "goldfish" - at least according to my Google searches. That's a much cooler name, and helps with imparting the sense of movement in my opinion.
Now, it's time for full disclosure - you can see that there are some minor flaws. Those flaws kept this pipe from being one of my high-grade, but the grain was far too pretty to sandblast. I've marked the price correspondingly low.
