Talk about pulling out all the new materials! This pipe uses two new and interesting things I found recently. The first is a synthetic horn that is, to my eye, nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. The striations, the irregularities, the color - it's all there. The other is a thick slice of something called "tortise shell". I'm not sure what it looks like exactly, but I think the piece here is too small to really get a good idea. I'll probably have to make a whole stem out of it to really see what it looks like.

The stain on this pipe is a new development of mine that I call "three day stain". It literally takes three days to sand and stain this pipe - hence the name. It really brings out the contrast in birdseye and straight grain, but retains the richness and warmth of brown stains that usually hide contrast when applied "like normal". I think it's a success. Please let me know what you think.

This pipe turned out so well that I almost had to create a new grade for it - Emperor grade. However, it didn't quite make the cut - though I don't expect anyone but me will ever know why. As it is, it's an extremely fine example of my work, and is the pinnacle to date. This pipe is the bar that all future efforts will be held to.
