Truth be told, I really lucked out on this pipe The briar block that I chose was a really unusual piece of wood with a strange shape and no real discernable grain on the outside. But, I'd been staring at that piece of wood for months now, wondering what I might do with it, so I decided to give it a go. I gambled on the orientation of the various holes, afixed a stem I made for the pipe, and just started grinding away wood. The rest, as they say, is history.

The staining was actually done in three separate stages, with light sanding between them to bring out the detail in the birdseye. There's actually a mix of four different stain colors in there. It took a LOT of patient sanding to get it just right. The stem has an accent ring of deer antler, and I decided to leave a bit of the "bark" on it for the sake of adding interest. Actually, this is the first pipe that I've used deer antler on. It's a great material, it polishes well, and has incredibly interesting coloration that ranges from stark white to light brown. I've used larger sections in knife handles, and it looks incredible, but never thought to use it on a pipe before today.
