Summer Ale
Price: $395

In the summer, tastes tend to lean towards the lighter side of things. Chicken may sound more appetizing than steak, and afficianados of dark ales may choose a pale ale over a Marzen. It might be due to heat or the sun, but whatever the cause, lighter flavors tend to rule the hotter months. I notice it in my smoking habits - I choose lighter orientals and flakes over my normal latakia-laden blends, opting for Evening Rise over Margate, or perhaps Perfection over 1792.

Along this vein, I found that I really had a hankering to make a pipe that was lighter in color and reminded me of summer. This is the end result - light colors, brief dimensions, and simple and refreshing nature. To me, this pipe really invokes the spirit of summer ales. It's light and refreshing, yet full of flavor and character.

The stem and ring really set this pipe off. It's a synthetic amber that I recently found that is far better than any acrylic I've ever seen. The coloring is subtle, yet contains loads of variation and is extremely interesting. I also left the wood mostly unstained - using only the lightest of my stains to aid in sanding and identifying areas where sanding was needed. The end result is simply delicious.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a pale ale calling my name...
