Pale Ale 2008
Price: $325

Following on the heels of the Summer Ale is a pipe I've called the Pale Ale. This pipe works off the same theme as the Summer Ale, but is given a darker staining, and different stem treatment. Beer lovers know that the Pale Ale is a style that includes more hops than most people might be accustomed to, which makes it more bitter than most style. That bitternes, however, is balanced by the addition of more flavorful malts, resulting in a darker beer with underlying sweetness. It's not to everyone's liking, and can be an acquired taste, but it can also be the first adventurous foray into some of the more flavorful and hoppy beers around.

In keeping with the adventerous spirit that leads folks to try a Pale Ale, leaving behind the bland and colorless liquid of mass produced beers, I've added a stem material that reflects that adventure - synthetic horn. To me this pipe evokes images of the adventurers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, leaving home on quests for glory and to experience the unexplored regions of the globe. Great hunters, explorers, treasure finders, and the like all shared a common sense of excitement at pushing the envelope and finding their own way in a wild and sometimes unforgivable world. A horn stem seems to me to perfectly compliment this feeling, and provides a glimpse of days of yore. I did choose a synthetic horn though, as my experience with natural horn is that it's best if used as accent pieces rather than an entire stem due to it's brittleness. It's possible to bite clean through natural horn, and the synthetic version is much more resilient and just as interesting. This material is a cast iron ***** to work with, but the results are stunning. The striations and variations are simply stunning, just as in natural horn.
Like other pipes in the "Seasonal Beers" line of 2008, this pipe is based off a dublin-shaped bowl, has robust proportions, and is accented with a faux ivory shank adornment reminding us of the thick, creamy foam that tops a high quality glass of beer.
