Summer Ale 2008
Price: $325

Last year I offered a pipe that I called "Summer Ale" (you can see it here) and that spawned a thought process for me. Every pipe maker tends to have a "hook", something like a theme or regular offering that they become known for. Since I'm also a registered Beer Advocate, avid homebrewer, and have dreams of one day opening a brewpub, I figured I'd take my other passion and incorporate it into a theme of regular offerings. This is the inaugural foray into that theme - Summer Ale 2008.

This is similar to last year's Summer Ale, but slightly longer, and with more robust proportions. It serves as a reminder that summer ales, while typically light in body and very refreshing, don't have to be "lite" in stature. Some of the best summer ale offerings I've ever sampled are light in body, of moderate carbonation, and have a wonderful flavor that includes peppery spice of grains of paradise along with zesty citrus notes from yeasty esters and the light application of hops. This pipe, with it's pale colors is an ideal match for the name. You can almost taste the zesty notes from a good bowl of bright virginias, perhaps rounded out by a sprinkling of dark orientals to provide the spice.

I added just enough stain to this pipe to provide a very light contrast and chose not to cover up the two tiny pinpricks on the top of the shank. Summer ales can be cloudy with yeast, and obscure the objects behind the glass, so adding a heavy contrast wouldn't be in keeping with the beer style. The shank adornment is made of synthetic ivory, and is a common aspect of all of the seasonal beers this year. It's reminiscent of the foamy head on a good glass of quality beer. The stem on this pipe is a faux amber that is some of the best I've ever seen. It has swirls of light and dark yellow/amber alongside areas of varying translucency. The material is very interesting, and very difficult to capture in photos. Hopefully I've managed to give you a taste of it's actual colors.
